In-Person Auditions

Undergraduate Only
Applicants to the Dance Division will participate in two technique classes: one Ballet and one Modern. Following the classes, each student will be asked to present a solo of 90 seconds in length. The solo may be repertory works or original choreography preferably, but not limited to, ballet or modern. Applicants must provide cassette tapes or CDs of the accompaniment for solos. An interview with the dance faculty is also required.

Applicants should wear the following attire for their audition:
Women: solid colored unitard or leotard with pink tights, pink ballet slippers, and pointe shoes, if applicable. Hair must be neatly and securely tied back.
Men: Solid colored unitard or white T-shirt, black or gray tights, ballet slippers.
Modern work will be presented barefoot.

Recorded Auditions
While recorded auditions are given full consideration, the Dance Division faculty always prefer an in-person audition. The faculty of each division recognizes that in many instances, traveling to Boston from great distances can be costly. If it is necessary to audition by recording, please follow the guidelines below:
Ballet: Barre and center work including adagio, turns, petit and
grand allegro. If applicable, please include pointe work (echappés,
relèvé passés, pirouettes en dehors
and en dedans).
Modern: Floor work, combinations, and progressions across the
floor including jumps and falls.
Solos: The solo should not be longer than 90 seconds and may
be a repertory piece or original choreography that is preferably,
but not limited to, ballet or modern.
The recording should include a brief oral statement by the applicant stating the following:

  1. Name
  2. Where he/she is from
  3. Goals in dance
  4. Why he/she would like to come to The Boston Conservatory
