The Boston Conservatory
requires a performance audition and/or interview depending on your major. Applicants are strongly encouraged to audition in-person at The Boston Conservatory whenever possible.
The Boston Conservatory recognizes, however, that travel can be costly and does offer two alternatives: regional auditions and recorded auditions.
NOTE: All female undergraduate voice applicants require the submission of a prescreen recording (CD only, in a standard plastic jewel case) by the December 1st application deadline. Applicants must mail the CD directly to the Office of Admissions. CDs must be clearly labeled with your full name and voice part. Please make sure to include a list of the repertoire performed on the CD. We suggest that you attach the list to the inside of the CD case. This recording should include representative pieces which fulfill the audition requirements, but they do not have to be the repertoire you plan to sing for your audition.
NOTE: If you are applying for a MM or GPD in Opera Performance, you must audition in person at The Boston Conservatory.
A complete application, fee, transcripts, and recommendations must be received prior to the audition.
An accompanist will be provided for Vocal and Musical Theater auditions in Boston only. As an accompanist is not provided at our regional audition sites, Vocal applicants should provide their own accompanist and Musical Theater applicants should provide pre-recorded accompaniment. Instrumental auditions must be played without accompaniment.
Recorded Auditions
We strongly recommend an in-person audition. However, we recognize that some students must audition by recording. Recorded auditions are accepted for all programs and degree levels for applicants living further than 500 miles outside of Boston or any regional audition site, except for the MM and GPD Opera Performance degree candidates.
*Artist Diploma, Choral Conducting, Orchestral Conducting, and
Composition candidates must submit preliminary screening materials following the guidelines below in order to be invited to complete the required live audition/interview.
*Please refer to your division (Music, Dance, Theater) for additional audition tape requirements.
—All tapes/CDs/DVDs must be labeled, both on the recording and on the outside case with the name of the applicant, the program and degree level to which he/she is applying, and the order of the program pieces recorded.
—Videotapes must be standard size and must be VHS format. International applicants may send tapes using the Pal Secam System if VHS is not available to them.
—Applicants submitting videotapes/DVDs should be sure the recordings are appropriately lit and are in focus.
—Applicants who choose to send a recorded audition should make
every effort to have the best possible recording made of their audition performance.
— Recorded auditions that are of poor quality often result in a student being denied admission.
—Applicants must also include a statement about themselves containing important information they would like to convey to the faculty.
*All tapes/CDs/DVDs/scores submitted become the property of The Boston Conservatory and cannot be returned.
Taiwan Applicants
For those Fall 2008 applicants in the Taipei area, we will be again holding our annual Boston Conservatory auditions on Dec. 22, 2007 in the National Concert Hall in Taipei, Taiwan. Anyone interested in auditioning in Taipei or with any questions, should send an email to Mr. Ou, Chang-Che at TaiwanOffice@bostonconservatory.edu or ojer168@yahoo.com.tw
