The Churchill Society
The Churchill Society recognizes those who have made provision in their estate plans to benefit The Boston Conservatory and have informed us of their generosity.
The bequests and planned gifts received from friends of The Boston Conservatory are a significant source of funding for our future. Your generosity can help provide a stable financial future for the Conservatory and its exceptional programs.
We express our gratitude by inviting Churchill Society members to special events held throughout the year and including their names with this special distinction in our newsletters, programs, and other publications. A permanent inscription bearing the names of Churchill Society members will also be on display at The Boston Conservatory.
H. Wilfred Churchill
H. Wilfred Churchill ‘38 was a devoted faculty member of The Boston Conservatory and is now a cherished part of the Conservatory's celebrated history. His life was filled with musical activity and integrity—teaching piano, accompanying students at recitals, and performing with instrumentalists and singers.
A native of Nova Scotia, Churchill came to Boston to study piano. When he joined the faculty in 1934 as a student teacher, the teaching staff of the Conservatory numbered about ten (there are now 150 full- and part-time teachers). He is well remembered for introducing piano four-hand performances to The Boston Conservatory, a popular event which continues to this day. Mr. Churchill remained on the piano faculty at The Boston Conservatory for over 50 years, and served in several important administrative capacities before retiring in 1987. In addition to his professional life, Churchill was an accomplished photographer, an avid cyclist, and an extensive traveler.
Significantly, Churchill was also the first person to bequeath his entire estate to The Boston Conservatory. In 1994, his bequest became the principal of a fund which provides an annual piano scholarship awarded in his name.
Because of his generosity, his noble dedication to the Conservatory and his passionate love of music, H. Wilfred Churchill will remain an inspiration to future generations of Boston Conservatory students and faculty. We are proud to acknowledge his legacy by naming our bequest society in his honor.
